My Kids Tackled My Wife!

I’ll admit my title is a bit of a tease (it’s the way all titles in the social media universe work!) but my title is actually related to a golden moment with my family. Mere hours after I’d officiated a Memorial service for a dear man who loved Jesus, and had reminded the grieving family that this life is precious, I came home to my family.

As I got out of my suit and into more comfortable clothes I heard laughter and my wife Aleta yelling, “Andy, help me!!” I came into our family room only to discover my wife and kids in a pile on the floor laughing. My 13-year-old son Josh, was holding on to Aleta’s leg, my 16-year-old son had her tackled around her waist, and my 19 year college student Cassidy topped the whole thing off by just sitting on top of everyone. Aleta said to me, “Would you please help me!?” But as I looked at the pile of laughter, joy and love I just didn’t want to mess with perfection. I stood back and said, “Naw. I don’t think I’m going to help you.” I just stood there taking mental pictures (which I personally think are better than the pictures we take with our phones), laughing with them, and enjoying the grace of a family so overflowing with ridiculousness, goofiness and love.

It reminded me of the words of King Solomon that I’d read mere hours before. “I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.” Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (NLT)

May we all enjoy the great gift of life that God has given us.
