Church Without B.S. Or Drama

Last Sunday I taught this thing at our church we call “The Connect Class.” It’s an introductory class for new people where we attempt to provide full and honest disclosure of who we are, what we believe, and how we’re trying to live our lives following Jesus. One of my favorite elements of the class is the questions, along with the raw observations and comments people make about church. Sometimes I hear things that are hard to hear, but things I need to hear. Other times I hear things that make smile.

Last Sunday I think I heard the best compliment you could give to a church. One of the people in the class observed, “My experience of this church is that there is no B.S. and no drama.” It wasn’t the only time they said it. I think it was said at least three more times in different contexts over the c02_01-jpg2dc5ed9b-b231-43cd-af93-5a99a4478a16originalourse of the class. The final time they said it I stopped them and observed, “You know what? Maybe that should be what we post on our website as a quick description of our church – ‘No B.S.! No Drama!'” It was nice to hear because this person wasn’t saying we were perfect (we’re clearly far from perfect or cool – and one of the main reasons is the fact that I’m the Lead Pastor), they were just saying we weren’t adding unnecessary layers of drama to church life, and we were trying to be honest in our walk with Jesus. I hope that will continue to describe our church for many years to come, and I also hope it’s what describes that church where you participate.
