My dear friend, Pastor Rob Patterson, posted on Facebook an appropriately scathing commentary on hateful “christian” commentary following the horrifying events of Orlando along with a beautiful prayer for the people affected by the tragedy. I thought I would share it because Rob’s prayer is worth our “amen”!
My heart is broken for the victims of the Orlando shooting, their friends, and families. In addition to the sadness I feel, I also feel shame. As a Christian I am ashamed at the comments I have read on social media that say or imply God would be happy about the shooting. I am repulsed by the comments a Sacramento pastor made saying he wished the government would line up gays and lesbians against a wall so a firing squad could “blow their brains out.”
I want to apologize to all my gay friends and family for such venom masquerading as Christianity. The Bible does not say, “God so loved the world – except gay people.” It says, “God so loved the world.” Period.
Tonight I am praying for these precious people who God loves. Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with the friends and family of the victims of the Orlando shooting, in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
