Freedom By Inches

I stumbled upon this great quote by Thomas Jefferson, in a letter addressed to fellow public servant Charles Clay, during the founding years of the United States of America. He wrote:

“The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good.”

It strikes me that while this is true in establishing a Republic founded on liberty for all human beings, it’s also something that I could almost hear Jesus saying to me as I follow Him. I could hear Jesus telling me, “Andy enjoying the fullness of the abundant life I offer isn’t going to happen in the 30 seconds it takes to re-heat your coffee in the microwave. The ground of your liberty – your full experience of the abundant life I offer – is going to be gained by inches. Why? Because it takes time for me to persuade you to think, and act on what is best for you.” Yep, the ground of liberty is to be gained by inches.

Yes a big Amen to this! When looking at a large undertaking it can be overwhelming, and I tend to do nothing. But taking one small step at a time me helps me to continue to progress.
