“The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him (Jesus). Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'” – Luke 17 – 21
The older I get the less I feel the old youthful eagerness about a new year, and the more I’ve experienced the brokeness of this broken world the more I feel a little nervous about what the new year might bring. Probably when I was younger I was eager because I naively assumed I had what it took to face whatever might come my way. Now that I’ve grown older I realize the reality of my own frailty. As I step into 2015 aware of this frailty it’s good to be reminded once again that this year, like every year since Jesus first came to this broken world, is “the year of the Lord’s favor.” Whatever 2015 holds for me and for you – whether good, bad or ugly – it is another year of the Lord’s favor.
Happy New Year my friends!
