God Alone Knows What We Want

My fifth and final discovery during my time of sabbath comes from the book of Proverbs. Proverbs 19:21 describes reality when it says, “Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand.” NASB  The word “counsel” can be translated “direction,” and the word “stand” literally means “endure.” Thus God’s purposes and direction for our lives, not ours, is the only thing that will actually endure. When we slow down we begin to listen. We start to hear God’s whispering Spirit, and we start to listen to our own hearts. As we listen we begin to realize that much of our frantic activity isn’t really matching our deepest longings. We discover we don’t really have a clue what we want in life, and we discover our activity isn’t really matching what we most desire. This can be a scary realization, but our serenity doesn’t depend on our ability to know what we want and then go out and get it. Our serenity comes from intimately knowing the God who knows us better than we know ourselves, and is committed to love us faithfully into the kind of person who is deeply content and overflowing in gratitude.
