You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5: 6- 8
These verses contain my most favorite idea in the entire Bible. It tells us something incredibly odd, but incredibly important. It says, “At the right time when we were still helpless Christ died.” How is being absolutely powerless and completely lost in failure ever a “right” time? The answer is really quite simple. It’s the “right” time because the time of our worst failure is the time we get to find out what we’re really worth. Scripture is saying, “God picked a strategic time to send His son Jesus to the cross and in God’s mind the perfect time to do that was when we were at our worst, sickest moment of sin.” The passage goes on to remind us that people don’t normally just give up their lives for any old person, because giving your life for others is the highest sacrifice one can give. It’s incredibly rare to see someone lay down their life for the I’ve-got-my-act-more-together-than-you religious person. If anyone does go so far as to die for someone else it can only be explained by the fact that the person they’re dying for is very nice and has a life record of showing great concern for others.
God’s done something absolutely crazy! He has demonstrated the quality of His love for us, and the quality of our worth to Him, by sending His own Son to a cross for us while we were still completely disregarding Him. God the Father sent His only Son to die for people who didn’t care about Him, and were spitting in His face saying, “I don’t need you!’” This is profoundly important because it shows us something about our actual worth to God. God thinks we’re worth the sufferings His Son endured. Remember, we discover what we’re really worth in the place of our most significant failure and through the eyes of the significant others in our lives. The greatest test of my value is discovered in what God the Father does for me in the middle of my stupidest, grandest failure. At my worst moment I fully understand what I’m worth to God. Scripture tells us that in this moment we all discover – “I’m worth God’s only Son!” At that time, God willingly gave up for me what cost Him the absolute most because He thinks I’m worth it. Mark this truth in your soul. The value God has placed upon us is not based on what we’ve done right or wrong, or what we might turn out to be. Our significance is based solely on the value we have because of who we are to Him. Incredible!
