Real ideas about God – Part III The cosmic-enabler-buddy-god

Maybe you’re worshipping a god who gives a free pass for you to indulge in whatever you want in life with no concern for any consequences for your actions. With this god you just keep doing whatever you want to do because this god “loves” you just the way you are, and doesn’t really care enough to do anything more than just leave you that way. This is a god we like to call a god of “unconditional love” but is really a god of “unconditional approval” who doesn’t really care what we do. If it makes us happy, who cares how it affects others or the rest of the planet? This god’s got our free pass covered.

In Psalm 50 God presents an interesting claim against His people when He says, “You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother’s son.  When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you.” In other words, we can think God’s silence means He, like us, has too many other things going on to really notice or care how we live our lives. Consider how you relate with God. Have you continued living the way you’ve always lived because you think, “God’s job is to forgive me”? Then God has become your cosmic enabling-buddy. Do you get upset with God when He doesn’t remove the consequences of your very poor choices? Then your God is your enabler-buddy.  How does this God-profile affect your life?
